One for All: Insights into a Transdiagnostic and Transtheoretical Blended Care Intervention
Event Details:
On Wednesday, November 13th 12-1pm (Pacific) we are delighted to welcome our very own Tech Hub visiting scholar and licensed psychodynamic psychotherapist, Friederike Fenski, to present on her blended care approach to psychotherapy. During her time at Stanford, Friederike has contributed her expertise in digital mental health interventions to Tech Hub projects and expanded her knowledge of pediatric mental health care through her work in Dr. Hong’s lab.
In this talk, Friederike will offer a comprehensive overview of the participatory development process behind a novel therapeutic online intervention (TONI) designed for outpatient psychotherapy in Germany. She will share key insights from interviews and focus groups with patients and psychotherapists, which led to an intervention adaptable to patients across diverse diagnoses and therapists from various therapeutic orientations. TONI is a comprehensive digital toolkit that includes twelve transdiagnostic and transtheoretical modules (like mindfulness, communication and understanding of emotions) as well as a range of self-monitoring tools. Psychotherapists that use TONI can individualize blended care by selecting and ordering specific modules or chapters and by implementing TONI flexibly into the therapy process. In addition, patients can request access to modules. To allow for a high blend of sessions and TONI, psychotherapists are able to view patients’ entries in the modules’ record forms. Patients on the other hand are free to share additional TONI components like symptom monitoring. Friederike will discuss practical applications of this intervention as well as present findings from a randomized controlled trial conducted in Germany over the past few years to explore the effectiveness of TONI, involving over 150 therapists and more than 1,000 patients.
About the speaker: Friederike Fenski is a licensed psychodynamic psychotherapist and doctoral candidate at the Department of Clinical Psychology and Psychotherapy at Psychologische Hochschule Berlin (PHB) and the Department of Clinical Psychological Intervention at Freie Universität Berlin (FU Berlin), Germany. She is currently a visiting scholar at the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University under supervision of David S. Hong. During her work at PHB and FU Berlin, she and her team developed a transdiagnostic and transtheoretical blended care intervention that is used in outpatient care in Germany. In addition to her interest in the use of innovative digital tools for various areas of mental health, she is particularly interested in under-researched areas in the field of psychotherapy. In particular, she researches possible side effects that patients may experience during psychotherapy and ways to counteract them.
