Parent-Child Interaction Therapy Augmented With Artificial Intelligence

Event Details:

Wednesday, October 14, 2026
12:00pm - 1:00pm PDT

Join us on October 14th 12-1pm PT to hear from Dr. Magdalena Romanowicz, M.D. of Mayo Clinic, on “Preemption of Disruptive Behavior in Children: Parent-Child Interaction Therapy Augmented With Artificial Intelligence.”

Dr. Romanowicz will explore how artificial intelligence and wearable technology can be integrated with Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) to help families manage disruptive behaviors in young children more proactively. Her talk will review the challenges faced by children with frequent tantrums and emotional dysregulation, as well as limitations in access to specialized behavioral treatments such as PCIT. Using findings from the PISTACHIO (PreemptIon of diSrupTive behAvior in CHIldren) program, the presentation describes how smartwatch-derived physiological data (such as heart rate patterns) and machine-learning algorithms can identify early signs of escalating distress and deliver real-time parenting prompts. These AI-supported alerts help parents apply PCIT strategies before disruptive behaviors fully emerge, potentially shortening tantrums and improving emotional regulation.

About the speaker: Magdalena Romanowicz, M.D. is a Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist in the Department of Psychiatry & Psychology at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. She directs the Young Child Clinic and serves in a research leadership role, with clinical and research interests focused on early childhood mental health, parenting interventions, and the use of artificial intelligence and digital technologies to improve outcomes for children and families.
