Join us on Wednesday, January 15th 12-1pm PT for an interactive panel discussion on interventions to address the impact of social media on youth mental health. Hear from Vicki Harrison, lead editor of the new book, Social Media and Youth Mental Health, published by the American Psychiatric Association this fall and co-founder of the #GoodforMEdia peer mentoring program at Stanford, and Dr. Rob Morris, co-founder and CEO of Koko, a non-profit that integrates free digital mental health interventions directly into social platforms. Together, they will explore both the challenges and opportunities within today’s social media landscape and its impact on youth mental health. 

Key topics will include:

  • The impact of social media platforms on mental health, and how to weigh the benefits and risks.
  • Opportunities for developing both on- and off-platform interventions to support wellbeing.
  • The broader factors affecting youth mental health beyond social media and how social media platforms may offer an opportunity to meet youth where they are withinterventions to address these risks.
  • Empowering youth to advocate for healthier online experiences through innovative programming and peer mentorship.

Moderated by Dr. Sara Johansen, MD, Clinical Assistant Professor and Director of Stanford’s Digital Mental Health Clinic, this session will provide a unique opportunity to engage with experts on how to create safer, more supportive social media experiences for young people.

Meet the panelists:

Vicki Harrison, MSW has over twenty-five years of experience working within the public health, education and mental health sectors developing innovative, community-based programs at the local, state and national levels. As Program Director of Stanford’s Center for Youth Mental Health & Wellbeing, she develops and implements a portfolio of projects promoting early intervention and increased access to mental health services and support for young people. She is lead editor of the new book, Social Media and Youth Mental Health, published by the American Psychiatric Association this fall; and is a frequent speaker for conferences, trainings and media interviews focused on youth mental health, social media and suicide prevention. Vicki is a founding member of TikTok’s U.S. Content Advisory Council and also serves in advisory capacities with the California Partners Project, Design It For Us, Stanford Children’s Health and the California Children’s Data Protection Working Group.

Rob Morris, PhD is the co-founder and CEO of Koko. At Koko, Dr. Morris has worked directly with many major Internet platforms, using AI to provide support and mental health insights to companies such as Pinterest, TikTok, Tumblr, OpenAI, and Twitch.  Dr. Morris earned his AB in psychology from Princeton University and his master's and PhD in media arts and sciences from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He is an award winning designer and his work has been featured in WiredNPRFast Company, and The New Yorker, among others.
